happy birthday to me

Lord,
let this feast of my birth be a reminder to me of all the gifts and blessings I have received from You this day and all the past days of my life. On my day of celebration, I thank you for my life and ask for another year filled with Your presence in my life that I may continue to grow in your love. Gracious God, I thank You for enabling me to celebrate my birthday with my best pals and loved ones surrounding me. Creator God, I do not know what lies ahead for me this year. Yet I know that You are holding my future in Your hand. Let my ways be pleasing to you, and be with me, Lord. Grid me with Your strength and grace so that I can live for Your light. Enable me to draw closer to You that I may walk in your peace and be the creative and loving person that you intend for me to be. I ask this and all things in the mighty name of Jesus.
Amen.

Okay. This is ridiculous.

Dogs are eating venison and avocado for food, and whores are getting paid more than me.

What is the world coming to?

hong kong 香港 hiong gong

31 July 2006
Just a little after 3 hours into the flight departing from SGP to HKG, i look out the airplane window, and am visually arrested by the muted cobalt blue sky with the most delectable marshmellow clouds! Light fluffy cumulus, stratus, stratocumulus, altocumulus, cirrus, cirrocumulus, and what have you! There's a piece of cloud looking like a cosy cotton wool carpet, for me and you to lie on. Just a mere silver of brilliant orange flicker in the far distance of the horizon, that must be the sun setting in the west. I turn my eyes to the clouds again. They're like solidified smoke...A while later, we sailed (flew) through fog, and the texture of the sky was evened out. Praise God for beautiful skies. Wow, clouds that can stand! That must be the cumulonimbus clouds spanning a few cloud heights. They look like icebergs and dancing bears, though i know that is a most weird description :P
I wish you were here with me, and we can play the 'do-you-see-what-i-see' game. I close my eyes to rest. I dream about us kissing - you leaning across the arm of the seat to me, and teased my lips with yours, (maybe) in full view of the passengers behind. But we're oblivious, because we're both high up in the sky :)
It is already Hong Kong 香港 inside the confines of the plane. People from China 中国 yakking so loudly, i could hear their comprehensive discussion a few rows away. A stewardess with bad English announcing over the jarring PA system. Much too loud, i can't make out what's she's saying. I mentally make a note of a list of people who can speak well, but with different vibes: pilot captains, radio deejays, motivational speakers, religious evangelists. Joann is reading Joyce Meyer, i forgot to bring my Noam Chomsky...
Once we touched down and checked into our guest house, we hit the Ladies' Market 女人街 to shop!
SHOPPING IN HONG KONG
01 Aug 2006
Hong Kong's road-side restaurant (茶餐厅) turned up the most tender and flavourful beef brisket noodles i've ever tasted, way better than all the posh Chinese restaurants in Singapore added together. Lunchtime happiness and a full tummy, all for only 港币 hkd$18!
Here's what went into my stomach for the rest of the day:
  • steamed milk 蒸奶 (looks like beancurd) and peanut butter toast with condensed milk.
  • thai-style kebabs of golden mushrooms wrapped in a ball, and succulent chunks of beef dripping with oil from the grill.
  • the famous 许留山 mango dessert! i had mango with sago & cream, mango with pomelo, pudding & sorbert! mango mango mango! i rather it rained mangoes than men. okay, kidding, i take that back :P
  • the crunchiest meat dumplings 饺子ever, stuffed with fresh prawns and mushrooms nestling comfortably in a clear broth
  • seafood hotpot 鸳鸯火锅, or steamboat as we know it in SGP, with 2 types of soup base and lots of sliced beef! yummyyy.
FOOD IN HONG KONG
02 Aug 2006
Headed down to IFC (International Finance Centre) at Central MTR Station. It's part of the business & financial hub of HK. The whole area exudes class, confidence and a commanding aura. I stepped into the IFC Mall, sauntered up to the mall directory looking for the Fruits & Passion boutique. In less than 10 seconds, a gentleman in a suit offered to guide me to my destination store with short but clear instructions. He turned out to be the mall manager. Very professional :)
I was agreeing with myself that the service standards in SG needs to move up many notches, when once again i was awed by the ultra friendly attendant serving everyone inside the ladies' toilet. Tops, without doubt.
BUILDINGS & SIGHTS IN HONG KONG
For helping Hazel to purchase her lovely set of Georgian Peach eau de fruits, a wonderful scent that will guarantee mhmm peachy times for couples, i've gotten myself into the HK Shopping Festival lucky draw - a chance to win an Audemars Piguet Jules Audemars Equation of Time Sunrise and Sunset White Gold Wristwatch worth hkd$590,000. Sweet! After i pawn that off, it will pay nicely for my first class air ticket to Australia and all my backpacking expenses to South-East Asia, many times over! hahaha.
TRANSPORTATION IN HONG KONG
Met up with the drummer and the guitarist of this underground rock band NUCLEAR whom i befriended during Asian Beat Grand Finals earlier this year. Sans their killer leather look reserved mainly for the stage, they looked like any nice boy-next-door types, who displayed their hospitality by paying for my sumptious Chinese dinner, carrying my shopping bags, getting me a discount at Tom Lee Music, and sheltering me from the rain! hehehe. Bad boys when doing their punk rock thing, but unquestionably good boys in real life. Their Cantonese kicks ass!!!
IT WAS RAINING MEN AND MANGOES
Guess what Chow Sang Sang 周生生 is?
1. a distant cousin of the funnyman Stephen Chow 周星弛
2. a madcap HK comedian witha cheesy name
3. a brand of barbecued pork 肉干
4. a shop selling traditional medicinal herbs
5. a new character out of the HK comics 老夫子
6. a silly term of endearment by some infatuated HK girl
No, my dear, it's a jewellery store selling diamonds! And you thought all jewellery retailers have elegant names.
Went to bed early cos Joann was down with fever & flu, poor girl! Said prayers for her, then dreamt of something i can't remember... Was it you?
OF ME, A FAT CAT AND AN ESCALATOR
03 Aug 2006
In a musical-chair edition of the flight back home, Joann and I went through 3 gate changes, 1-hour flight delay, and about 10-over air bumps during takeoff turbulence, due to the typhoon looming. I was practically raised in the air above my seat at one point *dizzy*. Thank God for Norah Jones on my iPod for calming nerves.
The only chance i get to write without disruptions is on the plane. Bedazzled by the sharpness of light emanating from outside the plane window, i read the local papers in the 3 remaining hours of my vacation.
My conclusion: there remains a tie between the food and the people for the vote of HK's major highlight. The food there is smackingly delicious in its Asian savouriness, and the people there are boisterously loud, but also melodious in their speech. The typical customer service person gives more information than the bare minumum. Talkative everywhere and giving the general sense of buzz in HK. Whereas in SG, everyone looks glum all the time :/
