beat it. mosh that shizzle.
Something I wrote for my 3-syllabled japanese company that was published in a local street magazine FRUITFLUID (go figure).
SINCE 1988, the Yamaha Asian Beat band competition has been one of the most prestigious, not to mention largest amateur band competitions in Asia, launching several band finalists into fame and fandom.
In Singapore, nearly 50 bands took part in the opening heats, with 20 bands cracking their way through to the semi-finals, and a final 10 bands making it to the national finals giving their showhand best.
After battling much frayed nerves and indulging in hushed prayer, each band took to the stage with their rendition of an original composition. Audiences that turned up gave great support to each of the competing bands, complete with home-made banners and glittery cut-outs of the bands' names. Pretty hot stuff!
Everyone present was treated to heart thumping, eardrum bursting sensations as the bands rocked it all out across music genres ranging from jazz fusion, R&B, new age metal, to alternative rock.
We saw rockers in fierce-looking face paint and headbanger costumes getting it on with their punk thing.
We saw under-16 youngsters parking their innocence and wowing us all with their dangerous musical liaisons. We saw spunky girls showing the boys who's boss, blurring the lines of any gender inequality.
What's more, guest bands like Westside (winner of Band Alert 1998) and Project Liquid (winner of Asian Beat 2004) showed the rocksters a thing or two as they jammed at the starting and closing of the competition.
After many hours of tough fighting and half an hour of excruciating waiting for the results, the judges (all music industry professionals) finally chose the following bands to surpass all the others.
Grand Prix Award: X-Tech
Distinguished Award: Youthwreck
Encouragement Award: Fortissimo
Having now separated the wheat from the chaff, X-Tech will represent Singapore in the Grand Finals.
Mosey on down to the Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza on 25 February 2006 and catch this exciting event. Expect another breathtaking sweep-you-away night as shortlisted bands all the way from Hong Kong, Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Malaysia, China, and Thailand demonstrate their musical prowess. Keep the music alive. It is going to be huge.
